Ballet, medieval art and interface design shape K Staelin's approach to art. Her engagement with the nature of understanding began in the dance studio. In ballet one strives to develop and control the physical sensation of movements. Sometimes there are disjunctures between what one feels and what one sees. For example, two positions might look similar but feel radically different. The opposing sensations both contradict and compliment each other. Traces of these early observations in the dance studio may be found in her desire to render the prismatic nature of reality.
K Staelin’s understanding of the mind actively, creatively assembling perceptions is rooted in her work in the digital field. As “Capital Taxonomist” for a Mellon funded Columbia University digital medieval architecture project K Staelin gained a deep appreciation for categorization’s vital role in our thought processes. Concurrently, discussions in the interaction design community highlighted cognition’s role in perception.
Her work may also be seen in The Drawing Center's Artist Registry
